Annotations for I Belong to You Mon Coeur SOuvre a Ta Voix

Lyric: I belong, I belong to you alone
Annotation:
Matt belongs only to Gaia, or Winston to Julia, or Samson to Delilah. In short, the addition of alone shows how dedicated to their lover the protagonist is. Although, just as context, all those relationships ended tragically, with Matt and Gaia breaking up in mid-2009, in 1984, Winston betrays Julia so that he is released, and Samson dies.

Lyric: You’re my guiding lightning strike
Annotation:
Obvious “Guiding Light” reference. She’s like a bright spark in his life, sudden, shocking and beautiful all the same.

Lyric: Ooh, I can’t find the words to say
 They’re overdue
I’ve travelled half the world to say
 I belong to you
Annotation:
Conclusion: It’s been a long time coming. We ended up with different people, but we always loved each other, and you know it. It’s long overdue. Now that you finally got rid of those pillars – that awful ex-boyfriend – come back to me and be my forever girl.

Lyric: But I assure you my debts are real
Annotation:
“I’ll owe everything to you.” as was said earlier.. He seems to be so indebted to this girl, that he’s willing to give up everything once she’s finally available. She must have done something for him.

Lyric: When my heart is split like Rio
Annotation:
Matt Bellamy and Gaia Polloni had a huge fight back when Muse came to Rio de Janeiro for the first time back in 2008. About this line Matt tweeted: https://twitter.com/MattBellamy/status/53879690393432064 (View from Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro)

Lyric: Then she attacks me like a Leo
Annotation:
Leos are the king/queens of the jungle. So keeping on with the queen imagery, he refers to the woman as a queen. But here he’s not talking about the same woman he owes everything to and traveled half the world to tell her how much she loves him. Instead it’s his current lover. Leos are also supposed to be really aggressive in confrontation. They’re confident and ambitious. They’re going to get what they want. She only attacks him “like a leo” though. She’s not a real queen, and she’s not gonna get her way. There’s a real Leo he has his eyes set on. Gaia Polloni is actually a Leo in astrology. Leos are said to have a strong and fierce personality that can get hard to handle.

Lyric: I’ve travelled half the world to say
 I belong to you
Annotation:
He has come all this way, when the girl is finally available, to assert his position as her counterpart. In relation to Matt’s personal life, both Matt and Gaia moved to each other’s home countries to live together: she first moved to London, then in 2006 he moved to Lake Como in Italy. Although between Italy and England there is not the distance of ‘half the world’, it is still a significant act of love, loyalty, and determination to move away from your friends and family for one person.

Lyric: I can’t find the words to say
 They’re overdue
Annotation:
The lyric is probably literal: this woman whoos him, so much so that he has a hard time finding words that describe her. However, there could be one more 1984 reference: as Newspeak is gaining currency and words in Oldspeak (our English) are being abolished, he can no longer find words to express his affection for the girl, as such ideas don’t exist in Newspeak. The idea of love is obsolete and eliminated from Newspeak.

Lyric: How much pain has cracked your soul?
How much love would make you whole?
Annotation:
The past relationship hurt this new queen, so is the speaker’s investment enough to make her better?

Lyric: And I’ll owe everything to you
Annotation:
You’re the current queen, so all that is mine is yours, as it should be. Fuck the past queen. The past queen could be the girl that he was in a relationship with once, or the past ruler could be the one that owned the new queen.

Lyric: It will be you who wears the crown
Annotation:
She’s the heir to the throne. Also could mean that she’s single now :)

Lyric: When these pillars get pulled down
Annotation:
When the current ruler falls. Probably a corrupt government inevitably falling due to an external force, a recurrent theme in the album. It’s also a reference to Samson considering the later quote to “Samson and Delilah”: Samson died pulling down the pillars of the temple where he was imprisoned.

Lyric: —se
Annotation:
The flying brick joke with the band’s name on it finally lands after crossing a stretch of opera.

Lyric: You are my mu—
Annotation:
Aside from highlighting the fact that Bellamy drew inspiration from Polloni, it also sets up a brick joke wherein Matt uses the band’s name in a song… except it gets subverted by the interlude.

Lyric: Ah, réponds, réponds à ma tendresse
 Verse-moi, verse-moi l’ivresse
Réponds à ma tendresse, réponds à ma tendresse
 Ah, verse-moi l’ivresse
 Ooh, verse-moi, verse-moi l’ivresse
Réponds à ma tendresse, réponds à ma tendresse
 Ah, verse-moi l’ivresse
Annotation:
“Ah! Respond to my tenderness Fill me with ecstasy Respond to my tenderness Respond to my tenderness Ahhh fill me with ecstasy Fill me with ecstasy Respond to my tenderness Respond to my tenderness Ahhh fill me with ecstasy” From an 1877 French opera, Samson and Dalilah by Camille Saint-Saëns. The aria is called “Mon cœur s’ouvre à ta voix” (“My heart opens up to your voice”).
